Register your bike to guard against theft!
The 「防犯登録」(Bouhan Touroku) aka Bike Registry certifies that the bicycle belongs to you. This registration is necessary to prevent bicycle theft. You can easily register your bicycle at the bicycle shop when you buy your new bicycle.
If your bicycle is a second-hand one from a friend, check if he/she has registered the bicycle. Your friend might need to sign a Deed of Transfer (譲渡証明書 Jouto Shoumeisho) to declare that he/she is giving the bicycle to you. You can make changes to the bike registry at your nearest bicycle shop with your Residence Card and the Deed of Transfer.
Do not pick up abandoned bicycles!
You often see bicycles in usable condition abandoned in front of train stations and road corners.
However, you should not pick them up.
As mentioned earlier, bicycles are registered in the bike registry so you might be suspected of misappropriation if the police happens to check.
*Any crimes committed or rules broken in Japan will be left in your track record and affect your future chances of applying or changing your Visa, so please be careful!!
Park your bicycle in designated areas!
Bicycles parked outside of the designated area will be treated as abandoned and removed.
In order to get your bicycle back, you will have to go down to the specific office and pay administrative fees. So please park your bicycle only in designated parking areas.
