Showa Day commemorates the Showa Emperor and his 63-year reign.
The late Emperor Hirohito was born on April 29th and he ruled from 1929 until his death in 1989.
This period is known as the Showa Era in Japan and it was when major events occurred in Japan as well as the rest of the world.
Some of the most prominent events are World War II, the dismantling of Imperial rule and Japan's rise to economic power.
Showa Day is held to remember the achievements of the Showa Emperor and to reflect on Japanese history.
Today, Showa Day marks the beginning of the long Golden-Week holidays in Japan.
