The meaning of apology
Maryna
1. Apology
謝罪
When you receive a warning it is important to apologize first. For example, you can say 申し訳ございません・すみません・ごめんなさい (I'm sorry). You do it to calm the other person down and express your feelings of apology and not to admit a mistake.
Also, Japanese expect you to apologize in advance (before starting explaining the situation). When explaining a situation, avoid using words like しかし “but” and ですが “despite”, as they sound like excuses.
In addition, it is necessary to “listen”(聴く) to what the other person is saying. There is a difference between 聴く(listen to opinions/music actively) and 聞く(listen to sounds naturally), so be careful.

2. Attitude
態度
When receiving a warning, look at the other person's face and show that you are listening properly. While listening, node your head and echo what the other person is saying. The next time you apologize, you should bow your head slightly, and lower your gaze to show that you are sorry. If you do not appear to be remorseful, you may increase the other person's anger.
