1. Order of precedence
席次
The order of places in hierarchy is called 席次. Usually, the superior or customer is asked to sit in the upper seat (上座), which is a better seat. The subordinate sit at the bottom of the table, which is lower seat (下座). It is your responsibility to invite your guests to sit.

2. Meeting
会議
In the meeting room, the person who is superior takes 上座 and the person who is in charge takes 下座. If there are customers or business partners, the person with the highest rank among the customers or business partners has上座.

So the order will be according to Diagram 1. The same is basically true for the reception room as you can see at Diagram 2. The best seats are the ones furthest from the door and closest to the window, so the top customer or business partner should sit in number 1 in the diagram, and the person with the next rank should sit in number 2 in the diagram. The person with the lowest priority in your company should sit in the position of last number in the diagram, closest to the door.

3. Elevator
エレベータ
The person in charge of your company will be the most visible person, so he or she will guide you. First, the person in charge enters the room, stands in front of the operating button (④), presses the “open” button to prevent the door from closing, and asks the customer to enter. The topmost person is at the back on the left when viewed from the entrance, so customers are guided to that position (①). When exiting the elevator, the person in charge presses the “open” button and asks the customer to exit first.

4. Taxi
タクシー
In a taxi, the person sitting in the passenger seat is responsible for instructing the driver about the destination and paying for the ride. Therefore, if there are 4 people in the vehicle, the person sitting next to you will sit in the passenger seat. Also, the best seat is the seat behind the driver's seat. The area behind the driver's seat is the safest place in case of a traffic accident.
If you are riding with two people, it is common to sit in the back row. In this case as well, the superior sits behind the driver's seat, and the subordinate sits behind the passenger seat. When riding with three people, it is common for the subordinate to sit in the passenger seat, as it is too narrow for three people to sit side by side in the back row.
